Abstract

Primarily ledger accounts, 1818-1821 (mostly 1818-1820) for the Warrenton Male Academy, Warrenton, N.C., and daybook accounts, 1822-1823 and 1830, and ledger accounts, 1830-1831, for Midway academy (near Ingleside, Franklin County, N.C.), of which Hill was the director. Entries for students, parents and guardians itemize charges and payments. Miscellaneous contents include: agricultural accounts and memoranda; entries for overseers and slaves; accounts and notations by Hill's son, Daniel Shine Hill; and two brief writings about the stages and disappointments of life. Clients included members of the Alston, Bragg, Branch, Bullock, Fitts, Hall, Hunter, Johnson, Jones, Patillo, Person, Plummer, Williams and other families.
